Home Away From HomeI grew up in a very safe and sheltered environment in southern California. For a change of pace and to explore the unknown, I went to college at the University of California, Berkeley. In the first year, the people I met often had common characteristics; that is, they were persons strong in their opinions with a clear aim and pursuit toward their goals. Their persona often intimidated me. Not only so, since academics often soaked up all my time, I didn't have a chance to make lasting friends from the social activities that I went to. Therefore, I often felt lost amidst a huge crowd, and alone. What really helped me was being with other believers in the Lord. I met with the church in Berkeley. Every Friday night a family would invite me and other students over for dinner and fellowship. During these times, I could open up my hardships at school and they would share with me their experiences when they went to UC Berkeley. It really helped to have people who understood. Not only so, we would read the Word together. This strengthened my walk with the Lord, so that daily, whenever I am by myself, I'm not entirely alone. The Lord Jesus, who is Emmanuel, God with us, is in me (Matthew 1:23). I am very thankful for the believers in the local church. Cindy Chen | Back to List |
